What is Cyber Safety?
Cyber Safety is all about using the Internet technology and other devices connected to the internet – Safely and also with great responsibility. By keeping yourself educated and updated – you can 100% keep yourself safe online.
You can say Cyber safety is the safe and responsible use of Internet and it is Information & Communication Technology (ICT). Cyber safety is about to not only keeping information safe and secure, but also being responsible with that information, being respectful of other people online. As per Cyber safety – it is advised to follow internet etiquettes also known as netiquette.
1. What are the common Cyber safety issues?
- Viruses and malware : Viruses and malware programs can spread, easily and quickly when you browse through websites.
- This can happen when we click on the links found on one of these web pages. It can also happen when you click on similar links in email mistakenly and can infect your computer.
- Once your computer is infected:
- It can run slow,
- Can get flooded with pop-ups,
- Can by mistake download other programs without our permission
- Can allow/provide our sensitive personal information to others.

- Use Strong Passwords, and keep changing them periodically.
- Install Antivirus & Firewall
- Be alert and use your common sense by not responding to spams
- Never Disclose your personal information
- Be careful – while downloading stuff from internet. For that you have to be alert and cautious:
- Don’t blindly check any check-box or be careful if any checkbox is pre-checked – which might just install extra applications you don’t want to install. These might be harmful applications as well.
- Keep your Computer software updated – specially Operating System and Antivirus Software and also all other applications you have installed.

Confidentiality of Information allows only authorized users to access sensitive and secured data.

Identity Protection – is a protection against theft and misuse of personal information over the Internet or Cyber Space.
- It makes sure no personal information can be accessed without consent.
- This is to make sure that nobody can misuse this information for financial gain or any other wrong purpose to harm you.
5. What are the tips to protect information confidentiality?
- By Creating strong passwords.
- By Use multifactor authentication–
- means providing 2 or more pieces of evidence.
- By Private Browsing
- avoid leaving a browsing history in the browser history.
- Safe Browsing
- Use updated Brower for safe browsing
- By visiting only Safe sites – specially when buying and product or service.
- Use HTTPS based sites to ensure data security over the network – used to encrypt and decrypt data and emails over the Internet
- Avoid using public WIFI and public computer.

- Also make sure to keep your passwords safe.
- Keep your data safe by keeping your hard disk encrypted.

- Check authenticity of websites and links – that they are trust worthy and secured.

There are so many Social media websites and are increasing in number with passing time. Few of the popular ones are:

- LinkedIn, etc.
There are many more for example youtube, tiktok, Digg, Telegram, MeetUp etc.
- Now a days these are being misused to attack & target for scams. But you can use following tips to stay safe on social media:
- Use a strong password
- Use a different password for each social media
- Password protect your devices
- Be selective with friend requests.
- Be careful while sharing something.

Cyber trolling is internet term or slang used for a person who intentionally starts arguments or upsets others by posting inflammatory remarks. The sole purpose of trolling is to:

- To entertain on the cost of upsetting someone,
- To raise arguments and conflicts to get attention

Cyber Bullying – refers to posting, sharing or sending a false, mean, negative and/or harmful content about someone. It can be like:

- This is with the intention to embarrass or humiliate that person.
- Sometimes while cyberbullying people cross the limits accounting to unlawful or criminal act.

Cyber Stalking means using of digital technology to track and harass someone. This kind of behavior includes:
- Checking in on someone on a regular basis and trying to get their attention – that too when person on the other side is not interested.
- This is done with the intention to stalk or harass individuals or group of people, or community, or political party or organizations – by:
- Defaming them,
- Labelling them wrong or by accusing them, or
- To threat someone or
- To Blackmail etc.

To use Social media or Social Network responsibly, you must make sure to follow following principles:
- Never ever spread rumors
- Never be rude or abusive
- Never Post about your personal problems.
- Never make fake profiles
- Be careful never share personal information and passwords to protect your identity.
- Keep changing your passwords periodically.
- Behave online – the way you want others to behave with you online.
